WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Hundreds of runners laced up their sneakers Saturday morning in West Haven.

The Savin Rock Marathon and Half Marathon brought runners along Long Island Sound and through neighborhoods in West Haven. More than 700 runners competed. Some were experienced runners, others were running their first race. A few are running races in all 50 states; this was their stop in Connecticut.

Runners say though these races can be tough, they’re worth it.

“I say this is the most diplomatic sport there is because that start line, finish line and course is shared by everyone, from the winner to the last finisher,” said Andrea Herrmann, who ran the half marathon. “And the only person who’s going to get you through is you. It’s really a community sport that celebrates everybody – whether you run or walk.”

Though the weather was a little chilly this morning, runners say it was much better than it was for last year’s race – when it snowed.
