NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — You’d probably feel out of breath after climbing hundreds of stairs all at once. That’s what more than 250 people did Saturday morning in New Haven.

They got an idea of what people who suffer from lung disease have to deal with every day.

Participants climbed the 531 steps and 32 floors at 360 State Street. Sixty of them were firefighters – and they climbed all those steps in their gear. They were raising money for the American Lung Association.

“I’m doing this in honor of my brother, Michael, who just last year succumbed to lung cancer,” said Marcelle Applewhaite, who made it to the top of the building. “First two years he was with me in spirit, but I’m doing this for him.”

Participants could walk or run up the steps. Some of the fastest runners have made it to the top of the building in under three minutes.
