Looking for something to do this weekend? We’ve got 8 ideas

(WTNH) — It’s the last weekend of February and if you don’t have any weekend plans, we’ve got some ideas for you. Many of them are great to do with your kids.

Spring is coming – are you looking for some inspiration for your home and yard? Connecticut’s largest and longest running Home and Remodeling Show is happening all weekend long at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. Doors open at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Want to bring your kids along? They get in for free!

If you’d like go get outside this weekend why not check out a ski competition? The Ski Jumping/Nordic Combines Junior Nationals are happening in Salisbury and Cornwall. The competition begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Satre Hill in Salisbury. Cheer these young athletes on in a ski jumping competition and a cross country relay.

Stomach growling? How does a bowl of homemade chili sound? The Old Saybrook Chili Fest is this Saturday. It’s a culinary competition on Main Street between chefs from all over the area – and you get to be the judge! It starts at noon.

If you’d like to find something that’s fun for kids of all ages, check out the children’s concert and musical petting zoo at Wesleyan University. After the University Orchestra performs you and your kids will get to see the instruments up close. You’ll get to learn how they work together to make the music you enjoy. That’s on Saturday at 3 p.m.

If you’d like some winter fun that’s exciting for the whole family then Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort is the place for you. That’s where the Special Olympics Connecticut Winter Games will be held all weekend long. Cheer on the athletes as they ski and snowboard starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. And it’s free.

How would you like to get outside, get some exercise and learn something while you’re at it? Head to Winding Trails in Farmington. You’ll start with a lesson indoors, then you’ll head outside to try out what you learned. The lesson starts on Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 1:30.

If you’re in the mood for some maple syrup this Saturday, head to Auerfarm in Bloomfield. Stop by a pancake breakfast and get a sweet lesson on how maple syrup is made. The sugarhouse is open – so stop in for a tour. Breakfast will start at 12:30 p.m. and at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Be sure to bring your appetite.

This coming Sunday night is a very special night – it’s Oscar Night! If you’d like to feel like a star and walk the red carpet head to the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook. You’ll watch the Oscars live on a big screen, pose for pictures – even hold a real Oscar. The party starts on Sunday night at 6:30.
