(WTNH)– There are thousands of people whose alarm clocks will not be going off Thursday morning because they are without power.
United Illuminating is reporting more than 90 customers without power. But the big numbers are with Eversource. As of 7 a.m., 66,631 Eversource customers do not have power.
A spokesperson for Eversource tells News 8 that high winds, heavy rain, and lightning contributed to the mass outages. But he says the numbers have come down by about 4,000 in only a half hour and the shoreline was lightly hit compared to Fairfield County.
The northeast corner of the state has the most outages. State police say there are state road closures in that area with Route 101 in Killingly closed in the area of Dog Hill Road and Route 244 is closed at the eastern Pomfret line.
Some parts of UConn’s main campus lost power early in the morning. Dorms, academic buildings and some of the agricultural buildings were all in the dark. Power there is back on now.
There are also several schools with delay openings Thursday morning due to the storm. For the full list of closings and delays, click here.
Downed power lines have also caused fires throughout the state. Hartford police is reporting some flooding as well as downed power lines. And debris from branches and fallen trees throughout the
city.
