HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) – A Hamden Boy Scout troop is moving forward with its annual Christmas tree fundraiser, despite the theft of several of their trees.
Troop 608 is selling them at Spring Glen Church on Whitney Avenue. They have more than 500 trees for sale, plus wreaths and holiday décor. The troop has been having this festive fundraiser for the past 65 years. The money raised helps pay for the troop’s outdoor activities and community service. It also makes it possible for all boys to participate.
“It gives us experience with leadership, all that stuff that boys need,” said Joseph Corradino.”It keeps us out of trouble.”

The Boy Scouts also get experience helping others. They assist the people buying the trees with measuring and trimming them; they also help them carry the trees to their cars. The scouts also donated 20 trees to local families who couldn’t afford one.
“I don’t feel like it’s Christmas without a Christmas tree,” said Boy Scout Liam Clune. “So if they can get that little help and just to raise their spirits for this holiday season I feel like that would be amazing.”
Not everyone is full of goodwill around the holidays, however. Last week at least half a dozen of the scouts’ trees were stolen. They were worth $400-$500.
“We’re on the front lawn of a church, so it’s kind of a double hit – taking from children and taking from a church at Christmastime,” said Joe Corradino, the Troop 608 Fundraising Chairman.
The Boy Scouts aren’t letting that get in the way of their mission, or dampen their holiday cheer. They’re going to keep their fundraiser going. Still, they had a message for the thieves.
“I’d want them to realize that this is bigger than just a few people making money,” said Boy Scout Patrick Pagano. “This is a troop and this is about making people’s days better.”
The Boy Scouts will be selling trees every day through December 13.
