8 things to do in Connecticut on MLK weekend

(WTNH) — Are you looking for something fun to do this weekend? We’ve got 8 ideas for you and your family.

If you would like to try some hot food and check out a cold ice carving showcase stop by the Fire & Ice Festival in Old Saybrook. It’s happening from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Saybrook Point Inn & Spa. You can sample some sushi or go for a horse drawn carriage ride. Plus, there will be movies and face painting for the kids.

Do you want to get outside and enjoy the winter weather? Family Ice Fishing Day is happening at White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 pm. All fishing tackle and course materials are provided – there’s no catch!

If you would prefer to stay inside this weekend sit back and relax while enjoying a show at Goodspeed Opera House. The Festival of New Musicals is happening all weekend long; there are lots of different shows to see.

It’s a holiday weekend and if you’d like to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stop by the Yale Peabody Museum. The events from 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday will honor Dr. King. You can see a performance or try an educational activity.

Do you know what this Saturday is? It’s Open Cockpit Saturday at the New England Air Museum. If you would like to sit in the cockpit of a vintage aircraft, here’s your chance. There will be up to ten of them for you to explore from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you like live music and want to support a good cause stop by the string quartet concert at St. Christopher Church in East Hartford. It’s at 3 o’clock on Sunday afternoon and it’s open to everyone. The concert will benefit East Hartford food banks. If you stay after the show you may get to meet the performers.

If you are looking for a way to warm up this weekend why not go for a run? The Save the Parade 5k raises money for the Greater New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Lace up your running shoes at the Farmington Canal Bike Path at Sherman Avenue on Sunday morning at 8:30.

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and if you have the day off stop by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford. The Community Day event celebrates Dr. King’s message. You can go on a tour or even make your own art. It’s happening from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
