(WTNH) — The holidays are a busy time of year and an especially busy time for travel. State police expect to be busy too. Gas prices are still low and they’re expecting heavy traffic on the roads this year. State police are stepping up patrols to keep the roads safe over the holidays.
State Trooper Timothy Ruppar was out on Route 8 on Wednesday keeping a close eye on traffic. He’ll be in his police cruiser over the holidays too, and he won’t be the only one. Police will be doing roving patrols to make sure everyone follows the rules of the road.
“We generally see a spike in just following too close accidents,” said Ruppar. ”Everyone’s in a rush trying to get to their destination for their own holiday festivities.”
Police are looking for drivers who are distracted and who are driving too fast.
“Allow enough time to get to your destination,” said Ruppar. “That way you’re not rushing, you’re not speeding. A lot of the time we find people are in a rush and that will lead to the motor vehicle accident.”
Police are asking you to move over whenever you see emergency responders, construction workers or tow trucks on the shoulder or in a lane – if you can do it safely.
Police will have DUI checkpoints starting Wednesday and lasting through January 3. There will be stops in Thomaston, Windham, New Haven, Waterbury and Killingly.
“The holidays are the spike – people are out there celebrating and that leads to drinking,” said Ruppar. “We continue our patrols out into the new year.”
Police recommend planning ahead for your trip. Keep blankets and water in your car just in case of an emergency and make sure your cell phones are charged before you leave.
