(WTNH) — Since this is the last weekend before Christmas time is running out for shoppers to get those last minute gifts. Many stores were open early on Sunday so people could finish their holiday shopping.

News 8 stopped by the Toys R Us in North Haven on Sunday morning. The store opened at 6 o’clock and shoppers were waiting to get in. Toys R Us stores in the New Haven area will also be open late.
Malls throughout the state opened early as well. Shoppers found that getting an early start helped them avoid the crowds.

“I don’t like to put off my shopping to the last minute but unfortunately we’ve had to, but we got right in, got a front row parking spot,” said Peggy Bartram, who was shopping at the Westfield Meriden Mall on Sunday morning. “A tip to the wise: get up early and it’s not crowded. We’re getting everything that we want.”

The National Retail Federation expects 90% of shoppers still have more shopping left to do. Stores were ready for a busy weekend.

“I expected it to be hectic but not as hectic as it was,” said Jose Torres, who works in Boscov’s Department Store in Meriden. “It was like a Black Friday times ten. But we managed and we did a good job. A lot of customers, a lot of retail that we got out.”

Several stores and malls have holiday hours on Sunday and this next week:
Kohl’s – open 24 hours
Walmart – open 7 a.m.
Target – open 8 a.m.
Best Buy – open 8 a.m.
Danbury Fair Mall – open 7 a.m.
Westfield Connecticut Post – open 8 a.m.
