STORRS, Conn. (WTNH) – The UConn women’s basketball team is back home. The Huskies landed at Bradley International Airport on Sunday afternoon. The team wanted to return quietly. There was no media availability at the airport or on campus. However, several fans, including Jack Cooley of South Windsor, wanted to welcome them home. They were waiting for the team at the airport.
“[I’m] here to see our fabulous girls,” Cooley said. “They’ve accomplished nothing short of a miracle.”
Fans clapped and cheered for the team as the players got off the plane.
“They were there for us and we’re here for them,” said Dan Mudgett of West Simsbury.
The Huskies were arriving from Dallas where they were knocked out of the Final Four by Mississippi State on Friday night. The heartbreaking overtime game ended UConn’s 111 game streak.
Fans, however, are focusing more on what the team has achieved.
“Nobody’s going to break that record, 111 games. Nobody’s going to break that record for a long time I don’t think,” said Mudgett.
After they got off the plane, the Huskies went back to UConn’s campus in Storrs. Students had been following the team’s run.
“Everybody on campus is always proud of this women’s team, so I’m also proud of them,” said Chris Tsang, a freshman. “I think they did a great job this year.”
The team’s success hasn’t just been exciting for UConn. It’s something that’s gotten the Huskies national attention.
“It’s really so cool that everyone knows UConn,” said freshman Kyle Baldwin. “Everyone knows that there’s so many wins – even people who don’t follow sports.”
Coach Geno Auriemma did not return with the team on Sunday; he remained in Dallas.
