BBB warns of social media scams

(WTNH) – The Better Business Bureau is warning of scams on social media. Stay away if you see a post about a “secret sister gift exchange”. Posts about a “holiday wine bottle exchange” are also probably scams. Some of your Facebook friends may have shared posts like these, so they may seem legitimate. However, your friends may not know they are scams.

The BBB says these appear to be pyramid schemes. They are like modern chain letters. Thieves are looking for your personal information and your money.

“The government is very clear on this – anytime you use social media or mail to solicit information from somebody on this type of a scheme, that’s illegal,” said Howard Schwartz of the BBB.

The best thing to do if you come across one of these scams is to ignore it. It is also a good idea to check with the BBB before getting involved in anything you think is suspicious. Never give out money or personal information. If one of your friends posts about one of these shady gift exchanges, let him or her know it’s a scam.
