NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Dr. Ben Carson spoke at a forum at Yale University Thursday night. Carson is Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He is also Trump’s former Campaign 2016 rival.

Carson spoke about the “value of common sense” at the forum. There was a line of people outside the building hoping to attend the lecture; many were turned away when the auditorium filled up.

“There’s going to almost have to be a revolution of young people who recognize that if we don’t have honesty and trust, we cannot long survive,” said Carson.

Carson spoke about his childhood and about how he attended Yale. Many in attendance were very excited to hear Carson speak.

“His ideals and how he speaks I find very appealing so I had to come and see him in person,” said Rebecca Criscuolo, a senior at Branford High School. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Carson did not discuss his nomination to Trump’s Cabinet.

Some organizations in New Haven want to talk with him about the need for affordable housing. They brought a letter inviting him back to New Haven for a discussion.

“We want to speak to Dr. Carson about the importance of preserving, maintaining, expanding actual public housing, but we also want to talk to him about those families that are in crisis,” said Amy Marx, Housing Unit Staff Attorney for the New Haven Legal Assistance Association.

New Haven Mayor Toni Harp was not at the lecture. However, she hopes to have a discussion with Carson at some point as well.
