MADISON, Conn. (WTNH) — A 5K run was held in Madison Saturday morning to honor the memory of a soldier who was killed in the line of duty.
Captain Andrew Pedersen-Keel, who is from Madison, was just 28-years-old when he died two and a half years ago. This is the second year the APK 5K run was held at Hammonassett Beach State Park in his honor.
It included a Ruck Sack March where participants carried back packs full of food. That was then donated to the pantry at St. George Church in Guilford where Captain Pedersen-Keel’s funeral was held. Military personnel, non-profit organizations and civilians came to show their support for him and his family.
“It feels wonderful to be giving back as much as I possibly can,” said Louise Sapia, who is with the Blue Star Mothers of America and was at the race to support Captain Pedersen-Keel’s family. “As one of the things they said during the opening ceremony, thank you sometimes doesn’t sound enough. So to actually do something and be active to thank our service men and women and their families, it feels really good to be here.”
The money raised at the event benefits charities that serve and honor our military service members.
