NEW HAVEN, Conn (WTNH) –Special Olympics athletes competed Sunday for the third and final day of the summer games.

More than 2,400 athletes competed in the games at Southern Connecticut State University. The events included five different sports: cycling, tennis, soccer, swimming and track & field.

“It’s unbelievable. No matter what, even if you fall, they pick you right up and cheer you right on,” said Jeffrey DePina, a soccer player.

Volunteers and athletes look forward to the games, which aim to inspire respect for people of all abilities through sports.

“They love the ability to be on a team,” said Beau Doherty, President of Special Olympics Connecticut. “They love to be able to compete. They love to be able to demonstrate that in front of their parents and their family.”

Athletes had support from hundreds of coaches and nearly 3,000 volunteers.
