HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — The chilly weather today didn’t stop fans from celebrating the UConn Women’s National Championship win. About 20,000 fans turned out for the victory parade and rally in Hartford.

One hundred-year-old Anita Benson is one of the UConn women’s biggest fans. She goes to many of their games, and didn’t miss their victory parade.

“Oh I couldn’t miss them on the TV,” she said. “I saw everything. I watched them…they’re the best.”

The UConn Huskies are the top dogs again. They are National Champions – for the fourth year in a row.

“The three seniors, to do that for four years, it’s just so special,” said Michele Augeri of Ivoryton.

Fans wearing UConn sweatshirts and blue and white – the school’s colors – were excited to celebrate the team’s success. They were also hoping to see their favorite players.

“It’s just exciting, you go from watching them on TV and then they’re right here in front of you – it’s just something you’ve got to come see,” said Marianna Kalander of West Haven.

Fans did see the team. The players and coaches rode through the streets Hartford, waving to their fans.

A familiar face was missing, however. Head Coach Geno Auriemma was sick and had to miss the parade. Players were touched by how many people were there.

“I’m a freshman so this is my first win and first time doing all this and it’s been crazy,” said Katie Lousamuelson. “It’s really cool to see everyone be so happy.”

The warm reception for the national champions on a chilly spring day was especially meaningful to some of the players.

“It was huge to be a part of that, said Breanna Stewart. “Especially because it’s my last one. Seeing the fans, saying goodbye to them.”

Fans we say they hope to be right back here again next year.
