NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– There are more options to bring a pet with you when you travel. You can typically bring your pets with you if you’re flying, but pets are usually not allowed on trains. But that is changing.

Nearly 3,000 pets have already been passengers on Amtrak trains. Thanks to a pilot test. Now Amtrak is expanding its pet program. And that means passengers can bring small pets on the trains with them. They will have to be in a crate or other pet carrier.

The pilot test was done on some of Amtrak’s eastern corridor trains. And it started in October. It was so successful that Amtrak has made it permanent on eastern corridor trains and some Midwestern trains.

The company has also expanded the pets program to its long distance trains throughout the country. Though you’ll still have to leave your pets at home if you’re taking the auto train.

But starting on February 16 you’ll be able to bring your pets on most long distance trains, for trips up to 7 hours long.

And the company is starting another pilot pets program to run from February 20 through June. You’ll be able to bring your animals with you on some Acela Express trains on weekends only.

But if you have large pets, they’ll still have to stay home. And of course service animals are always welcome on board.
