BRIGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH)–October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on Friday night, hundreds of people gathered for a pink-themed fundraiser.
St. Vincent’s “SWIM Across the Sound” hosts the event every year in Bridgeport. Kitt Shapiro, the daughter of the late singer Eartha Kitt, was the special guest on Friday night.
Shapiro says screenings are important for all types of cancer.
“If she’d had colonoscopies she probably would’ve, we would’ve caught the cancer very early. that’s what I believe. She wouldn’t have died from a disease that was preventable,” Shapiro said of her mother.
“Knowing there are so many women here who have survived breast cancer and are able to celebrate every year, which is a blessing, so it’s now my blessing as well,” said Anthy Semesthias, who is a surgeon and breast cancer survivor.
SWIM Across the Sound raises money to help patients and their families and to help more women get screened for breast cancer.
