NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) — Police say 2-year-old Paisley Miles was found safe early Saturday morning after an amber alert was issued for her. Police are now searching for her father.
On Friday, just before 10 p.m., New Britain Police received a 911 call from a neighbor reporting a physical domestic incident occurring inside a unit at the Mountain Ridge Condominiums. The person who called reported that it sounded like someone was being thrown around inside of the apartment.
Neighbors, including Miriam Geraci, were shocked. Geraci used to live in that building and has lived in the neighborhood for about five years.
“I’m taken aback a little bit that it happened in my neighborhood because you always hear about it happening in someone else’s,” she said.
When officers responded, they knocked on the door repeatedly, but received no response. Due to the information given by the caller, officers forcefully entered the unit.
Once officers were inside, they found a woman in the master bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head. Officers requested emergency medical services for the victim, and once New Britain EMS responded, they pronounced her dead at the scene. Police are not releasing her identity at this time, pending notification of family. They also are not commenting on the woman’s relationship to Paisley Miles or to the child’s father.
No other victims or suspects were located within the unit, but police realized the woman did not live alone.
“[Police] did note there were several items that would indicate that children had been present, living there. There was pictures and there was also diapers in the garbage,” said Captain Thomas Steck of the New Britain Police Department.
One of the children was with family, but the other could not be accounted for; this prompted the amber alert. Police say the little girl was found safe in New York at about 4 a.m. Saturday, and that her father had left her with family. Police are now seeking an arrest warrant for 36-year-old Patrick Miles.
“He does have some criminal history, nothing here in New Britain, but other areas of the state,” said Steck.
The child was evaluated at an area hospital as a precaution and has been returned to family. DCF is now involved.
A search warrant was obtained for the apartment, which is on North Mountain Road.
“It has brought us all together in the two complexes, so we’re all talking,” said Geraci. “We’re all being vigilant, keeping our eyes open.”
