NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — High school football players in New Haven had something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving – a new field to play on. The first game was played on the new Bowen Field at Hillhouse High School.
“Be thankful. It’s Thanksgiving, times of giving back,” said Hillhouse Head Coach Reggie Lytle. “Their way to give back to the school and career is come out here, play hard, and lets win.”
Hillhouse and Wilbur Cross High School went head to head in Thursday’s Elm City Bowl on the field. Hillhouse had not played a home game on Bowen Field in three years. The field closed for much needed renovations, which took longer than expected. The work also cost a lot more, since toxic chemicals were found in the bleachers and the track. Coaches and school administrators were excited that the field was ready in time for today’s game.
“It was touch and go over the summer,” said New Haven Superintendent of Schools Garth Harries. “A few weeks ago we had a good sense it was going to happen. But we were looking at other options, thinking about other ways we could play the game. But the facilities guys kept cranking, kept the faith and got it done.”
Not all the work on the field is done, however. Bathrooms and locker rooms still need to be finished.
