GUILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – When the melting snow and rain from Sunday combines with dropping temperatures, there is the potential for some slick roads overnight and early Monday morning.
Susan Ward was visiting family on the shoreline Sunday. She was already thinking about driving home to Massachusetts on Monday and thinking about safety. She stopped at Page Hardware & Appliance Co. in Guilford to buy some ice melter.
“[We want] the pet friendly one because we don’t like to slip and we like to keep Sugar safe,” Ward said. “Sugar is our dog.”
Many shoppers were buying ice melt. There’s plenty to choose from, including pet-friendly formulas and melters for different temperatures.
“There are ice melters that can go to very, very low degrees, 20 below and there are some at 7 below,” said John Anderson, who works at Page Hardware & Appliance Co.
The best way to spread the ice melter will depend on what formula you buy.
“In a shaker…with holes at the top you’ll be able to shake it out and have a better dispersal,” said Anderson.
Because walking on ice can be dangerous stores sell cleats that slip over shoes. They have steel plates underneath them to grip the ice.
It isn’t just the pavement that can get icy. Your car’s locks can also freeze, but you can buy a de-icing spray for them. Though you can buy ice scrapers to clear your windshield, there are other options too.
“If you don’t have a good scraper or the scraper is having a hard time releasing the ice from it we have a spray,” said Anderson.
