EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car in East Haven on Saturday night, police say.
Authorities say the victim was hit near the corner of Foxon Road and Paul Street around 8:30 p.m. Police say the vehicle and the people inside were later located in New Haven. Police have not made any arrests at this time, though they say they have a person of interest.
Anthony Mentillo owns Gia Marie’s Pizzeria on Foxon Road, just down the street from where the accident happened. The restaurant was open at the time.
“My daughter had just left so I went out to see what was going on,” said Mentillo. “I get over there, I see them administering CPR to a lady in the street.”
Mentillo says he later found out he knew the victim, who used to stop in for food. Neighbors say she was an elderly woman. Police are not releasing her name until they notify her family.
“We started actually delivering to her so she wouldn’t have to come over here. I’d have my drivers go over there and bring her whatever it was that she wanted,” said Mentillo. “It’s scary because I watch people cross back and forth across this street all day long – little kids, elderly people.”
Neighbors say the victim was crossing the street after leaving a gas station near Paul Street. They want something to be done to make the area safer.
“I’m going to go personally to town hall,” said Mentillo. “I was talking to the gentleman at the gas station trying to get a petition to get a light or at least a crosswalk put into this intersection.”
The victim was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where she died from injuries sustained from the collision.
The road was closed in the area for a few hours for accident reconstruction. Police ask anyone with information to contact them at (203) 468-3820.
