MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Communities all over Connecticut are marking 15 years since the terror attacks on 9-11, the deadliest on U.S. soil. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day.

Milford, a city with a connection to the attacks, is having a remembrance ceremony at 8:30 on Sunday morning at the Woodruff Family YMCA. The community will also honor everyone who helped with the rescue after the attacks.

Three of the people who died on 9-11 went to school in Milford. Ray Vitali was the principal at Live Oaks School 15 years ago, and he said the attack hit the Milford community hard. Vitali is now a member of the city’s Board of Aldermen and of the Milford Prevention Council, the organization cohosting the ceremony.

“We had two individuals who were students at Live Oaks, Avnish Patel and Michael Miller, who lost their lives in the Twin Towers,” he said.

The community will remember them at the ceremony. There will be a ringing of the bells to mark the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center.

“This is extra important to me and it’s extra important to the idea that we can’t forget what happened, that horrific event on 9-11,” said Vitali.

The Milford community came together shortly after it happened, and organizers are hoping the ceremony will bring people together again, 15 years later.

“Hopefully they will get there and just do some thinking about what kinds of things we’re involved with around the world,” said Vitali.

A 5K and family day event will follow the ceremony.
