NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Hermine has had little effect on Connecticut so far. That has been a relief to many who worried it would ruin their holiday weekend plans.
Clear skies and calm water made for a great day at the beach at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven on Sunday. It was also Emma Sokoloff-Rubin and Sam Purdy’s wedding day. The past few days have been especially stressful for them, since they were expecting Hermine.
“We had some frantic emails, mostly from me,” said Purdy. “I like to pay attention to the weather and things weren’t looking so good.”
Instead they were able to spend some time outside with their guests. They had a backup plan just in case the storm did hit. Fortunately they got to have the wedding they wanted.

“It made me almost glad that we thought there was going to be a hurricane because it made it feel that much more special because here we are and it’s sunny and there isn’t much wind,” said Sokoloff-Rubin.
They weren’t the only ones outside enjoying the sunshine. Families had expected to have to spend the day inside. Instead they got to spend part of their Labor Day weekend at the beach.
“I actually went into the sprinklers for a little bit and then I’ve been walking around the side of the beach,” said Yolimar Cruz.
Still, the City of New Haven isn’t taking any chances. Crews put concrete blocks near the Carousel to protect it. But on Sunday they were used as a place for wedding guests to sit instead.
“I’m happy for them too because this is their wedding,” said Ginny Bales, one of the wedding musicians. “You want everything to be sunny and beautiful and perfect.”
“Way back when, we were hoping for this,” said Sokoloff-Rubin.
The Eli Whitney Museum had offered to be the couple’s backup location – just in case the weather had been bad.
