NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Residents of New Haven will now have the “opportunity” to use the city’s new resource center. Mayor Toni Harp cut the ribbon at the Opportunity Center on Dixwell Avenue on Friday afternoon. City and state officials formally opened it at a ceremony just before the ribbon cutting.
The Center is supposed to be a one-stop outlet where people will have access to city departments, social services and state agencies. Those who will be working there say it’s like a satellite office of City Hall – with nonprofit groups.
“We’re on a bus line so you come on the bus line and [it is a] one stop shop,” said Velma George, Coordinator for Homelessness for the City of New Haven. “You can get all the things you need done in one visit with one bus fare, and that’s an exciting thing for folks on a budget.”
The Opportunity Center’s resources will include homeless and elderly services. Visitors will also be able to get Elm City Resident IDs there.
