(WTNH) — The weekend is almost here. Are you looking to get out of the house with your family? We have some ideas that are fun for you and the kids – and some of them are free.

Celebrate the warm weather in Oxford this Sunday at the Food and Arts Fest. The food trucks will be serving up a tasty lunch. The kids can get their faces painted or meet a magician. Head to Great Oak Road for noon. It’s not only fun – it’s free.

It’s a great weekend to be in the Elm City. The two week International Festival of Arts and Ideas is just getting started. See dancers and listen to musicians and speakers. There are more than 170 events, and most of them are free. The events start at 9 a.m. on Saturday and on Sunday.

The strawberries are in season, and it’s time for Strawberry Fest at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield. Pick your own berries, taste some strawberry shortcake or enter a pie eating contest. It starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

If you are a foodie you’ll want to be in Mystic this weekend. Taste of Mystic is your chance to sample foods from 20 restaurants in the area and listen to live bands. It’s free to get in, and part of the proceeds from the food will benefit local nonprofits. It’s at Old Mistick Village, and it starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday and on Sunday.

If you like motorcycles and want a reason to ride, head to Plainfield. A Reason to Ride raises money for veterans in need. You’ll pass through several towns in southeastern Connecticut. The ride leaves from the Plainfield VFW Post at noon on Sunday.

Are you looking for something that’s fun for the entire family? Head to the Family Fun Festival at Masonicare in Wallingford this Saturday. You’ll find rides, games and even a parade. It starts at 10 a.m. and it’s free.

Wednesday was World Oceans Day, but you can celebrate this Saturday at Mystic Aquarium. Try finger painting with mud and learn what you can do to protect our oceans. Deck out your strollers with an ocean theme – you might win a prize. It starts at 10 a.m.

Ahoy Mateys! It’s Pirates Day in Milford this Sunday. Join Captain Kidd and his crew as they sail into the harbor and take over downtown. Wear your best pirate clothes to the Pirates Parade search for Captain Kidd’s treasure. It starts at noon.
